Gardening Jobs to do in September

There are many things to do in September apart from just harvesting and sowing plants. The main gardening advice is to focus in this month is tidying up your garden and composting any unwanted or dead foliage. If you leave it on the ground to rot then it may spread disease and damage the rest of your crops. Weeds will still be growing in your garden, especially on areas where you have recently cleared. You should continue to hoe regularly and if possible, plant green manures to halt the growth of weeds and re-vitalize your soil with key nutrients for plant development, such as nitrogen.

September still tends to be very hot and dry and so plants will need to be watered regularly to prevent them from drying out and dying. If you have learned how to grow potatoes you need to be harvesting them now. If you are in a place where rainfall is scarce, then you should be trying to water your crops at least once a day.

Just like last month, you should try and plant some green manures such as field beans, annual ryegrass. You should use a fork and turn it regularly in order to aerate the compost. When the heap is dry, you should water it and when it is cold, you should cover it in order to stimulate decomposition.

You should harvest any onions from your vegetable patch that you still have in the ground and store them. Remember to dry them out thoroughly before you store them otherwise they will become mouldy and will go off. You should now be forcing tomatoes to ripen so that you can pick them, do this by cutting off all the lower leaves to stimulate growth of tomatoes. When dealing with bush tomatoes, you should cover them with a cloche or fleece.
